JIMS is a multi-instrumentalist/songwriter who has been active in an array of bands since 1996 at the ripe age of 11. He specializes in a genre-blending style referred to as "Space-Punk," which is a unique mixture with elements of post-punk/psych-folk/soul and world music that exemplify both Caribbean as well as western influences.
Whether it's just him with a loop-station, or a 3 to 6 piece band, there's always an essence of unity and Love for a universally shared experience.
As a 6 year old, JIMS was already teaching himself how to play drums as a fun way to sing and play along with songs “in his head’ for “pretend bands” from his “imaginary record company’. Inspired by MTV’s 24 hour programming on “Cable TV” in the early 1990’s, he started to teach himself guitar and bass, quickly changing his influences from superstars like Prince and Michael Jackson, to claiming “Punk” by the time he was 10, not only because it was easy to play, but mainly to just be real and stop pretending. He immediately started initiating his best friends as his bandmates, teaching them how to play the instruments assigned ‘close enough’ to play his songs. Fronting his first couple of bands “Code Red’ in 1996 and punk/ska band “Sparkin’ Hand Steve” in ‘98 on Vocals,guitar, he had started to make a lil bit of a name for himself in the local Cincy/NKY ‘underage’ punk community. By 2000, he was lead singer and switching guitar&drums with bestie & songwriting partner Adam Richardson for indie-emo-ska collective “Prick B. Mafia”, while also playing whatever instrument was needed for any of his friends’ projects. By the mid 00’s, he was chief songwriter/guitarist/vocalist for proggy post-punkers “Sweet Ray Laurel”, who achieved modest success landing Warped Tour and co-headlining Bradfest with Cracker in 2012. During the same time frame, he was juggling drums/vocals duties for Phratry Records’ prog-core band “Smoke Signals” , “Newport Legend” Hellcat Matt, and also Steve Earle of “Afghan Whigs” fame, respectively.
His first solo outing, Mandarin EP (and recordings) (2016), was DIY by definition; not only by playing every instrument, but also being self-produced and engineered. He began touring around the states recreating his live sound with a loop-station and guitar (also used as percussion) to build loops in front of the audience as part of the show. Not long after, he recruited his best friends Brother Weeden (Bass, Vocals) and The Sarbest (Guitar,Keys) to create more of a “full band” sound, culminating in the album “…And His Fellow Mandareenians” , and a Split 7’ with Symptoms, all recorded in one day while touring the Pacific Northwest in 2017. The concept album, Sentimental Health (Iron Fest Records) (2021), found him working with producer Jesse “Soundbyte” Sinopoli to create his most ambitious release to date. Taking the opposite approach to the previous album, they spent extra time and persistence on recording variations of each song to make sure there were “no sounds left unheard” creating a more epic and sometimes orchestral feel, while simultaneously containing it’s own “organized chaos”. The “live” band was then extended into a 6 piece to perform the album respectively, adding Adam “Turbo Roof Dog” Dafish (trumpet, vocals, Hype), Adam Flaig (keys, guitar, percussion), and Justin “Time” Crittenden (drums), respectively. November 2025, the single EP “Kinda Blue” was released with 2 bonus tracks and a MUSIC VIDEO!!! As the ‘live’ band continues to be a revolving door, the lineup now comprised of Steve Earle on drums and K. Sloggins (Sweet Ray Laurel) on bass, taking the sound to another level as a power trio, while simultaneously stripping it down.
